Still Authoritative

You may remember this post from last month. Things are not much different, and this is how I know that Technorati has seriously jacked things up. My authority now stands at 465, which is some fairly big league stuff, as the highest possible is 1000. That kind of a number for a blog which has, let's look at today, accumulated 4 visits so far, must be inflated by some completely useless criteria. Technorati has an algorithm or two to look at, methinks. Here's the completely unhelpful way they derive their "authority":

How is Technorati Authority calculated?

  • Authority is calculated based on a site’s linking behavior, categorization and other associated data over a short, finite period of time. A site’s authority may rapidly rise and fall depending on what the blogosphere is discussing at the moment, and how often a site produces content being referenced by other sites.
  • The new Authority calculation differs from the past version, which measured linking behavior over a longer 6 month timeframe. Please note that links in blogrolls don’t count towards Authority, as they are not indicative of interest in relevant content; we stopped including blogroll links in August 2008.
  • Authority is on a scale of 0-1000. 1000 is the highest possible authority.

The final analysis for me is that with an authority of 465, I should be expecting, at a minimum, a few hundred visits per day. I mean, 465 is solidly middle of the road, and I can't even guess at the number of daily visits the top blogs get. Never mind my overall "ranking," which is an unrealistic 8542 out of what must be hundreds of thousands.

All of which is to say that I can't see Technorati being a reliable measure of anyting for a blog, however big or small. Not that I ever knew what it was for in the first place.

Also, digging around in the support section over there reveals an enormous amount of unsatisfied users since the big Technorati overhaul, and absolutely no effort on the part of the staff to address or fix any of it. Well done, jerks.

I could have sworn I commented on your first post in this space... or did we exchange e-mails?

Just for grins 'n' giggles I checked out EIP... 475 with a red down arrow, whatever that means. I suspect it ain't good, though. But, I'm with ya on this whole Technorati thing. When last we spoke on this subject I think my authority was about a third of yours, IIRC. There's no earthly reason or explanation for the sudden increase in my rating.

Must have just been emails, because I thought you did, too.

I think the arrow just means you're down from yesterday, or something. Based on my little blog alone, the authority is obviously no real indication of a site's position in the 'sphere relative to others.

I used to use it back in the day on my other blogs. I used to think it meant something. But honestly - it didn't. Doesn't. I use SiteMeter now simply to track the activity on my blog a bit better than what WordPress does.

But really... I don't care honestly how we rank in blogosphere. Its not what it once was. I simply enjoy the few new blogs that I've found & some of the old faithfuls still kickin' around.

Technorati or not...

KC - Down to the wire in the ol' Grey Cup, I see. Pulling for BC I hope? I'll root for Saskatchewan, considering I'll be freezing my sack off up there in it's northern reaches in a few weeks.

Grey Cup?
What's that?? BC Lions?? BAHHHAHAHA...

Sorry.
LOL... I don't follow CFL. I much prefer NFL. I know. I'm a traitor that way. I also don't truly follow Hockey either and that IS our national sport.

KC = BAD Canadian. BAD.

From what I'm hearing - the BC Lions are doing terrible. They are actually quite the joke even in these parts. Apparently its "Fumbleball" rather than Football with them. Who knows.

You poor poor sucker... going to Saskatchewan??? Man oh Man. Bring 'em long johns, a toque, a parka, and lots of wholly socks. I don't even you! Thank goodness for Canadian Whiskey to keep you warm at night!!!

sorry....
I don't ENVY you...

I don't follow the CFL, either, but with my pending trip I decided to look into it. I think BC is in the semifinals, believe it or not.

I'll be in Stony Rapids, a scant 40 miles south of the Northern Territories. Working outdoors, with my hands. Holy shit. I'll get pictures of whatever displaced polar bear keeps me warm at night.

As for not following hockey - should you need any help there, I and good friend Buck will be glad to motivate you.

You're going to Saskatchewan? I used to party in Regina in the way-back... one of the more interesting places I've ever been in my life. Seriously. That's some wide-open country up that way.

I used to follow hockey back in the day... when the Montreal Canadiens were actually a good, GOOD team. But I was still in high school when that was. I get into it occasionally - last year the Canucks did pretty good and I jumped on the bandwagon. Personally I prefer the OHL to the NHL - its faster, better, more aggressive playing. But these kids have something to proove so they must play that way.

Take lots of pictures. There is snow up there already. The Torch (Olympic) was up in those parts and saw plenty of Polar Bears. The older I get... I grativate towards the warmer climates.

Geez, Andy, I hope it pays well.

It doesn't, Gordon. Pays nothing, and traffic is still just about 20 visits a day. That's how I know the Technorati thing is bunk. There's probably blogs with hundreds of visitors/day that are ranked lower than I am.

Technorati, Site Meter, visits per day...blah, blah, blah...

On first encounter it seemed like boys in a locker room playing whose is biggest.

Still does.
