Handing Out The Assignments
In the Army, radio call signs were specific to your position, and anyone who was a commander from the company level on up had his call sign end in "six." Blue Devil Six was the call sign of the commander of the 2nd battalion, 504th PIR. As soldiers, we tended to carry these little idiosyncrasies into our home lives, and married men referred to their wives as "Household Six." The commander of the house. That's what I am going to do from now on - my wife will be referred to as HH6. My baby will be referred to as "My RTO", which stands for Radio Telephone Operator, and was typically, at least in my MOS (military occupational specialty - my job), basically an apprenticeship position. A Forward Observer was first an RTO for a seasoned F.O. before eventually getting assigned to an infantry platoon of his own. Hence, the baby gets to be my RTO.
